BKLYN DESIGNS™ 2008 RAISING THE BAR FOR NY DESIGN WEEK
Show Expanding to Four Venues, Showcasing a Record Number of Exhibitors, Featuring a Stimulating Seminar Series
(Brooklyn, NY – April 4 2008) Each spring thousands of design cognoscenti and furnishings lovers from around the world descend upon the Big Apple to take part in the much acclaimed New York Design week. BKLYN DESIGNS™, presented by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, is the event that launches the festivities. This year, the three-day show will feature a record-breaking line-up of 68 exhibitors - including 30 newcomers and 38 show veterans – and for the first time, has expanded to four DUMBO, Brooklyn venues. A revamped Web site will assist attendees with pre-show planning and information.
According to Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President Carl Hum, “The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is proud to present another edition of BKLYN DESIGNS. Every year, it becomes more evident that Brooklyn is not just a place where furniture is being designed and manufactured but that Brooklyn is the center of cutting-edge ideas, forward thinking, and innovative work. The Chamber is pleased that BKLYN DESIGNS brings this burgeoning creative community together.”
Stellar Seminars
Not only will BKLYN DESIGNS attendees enjoy the latest trends in contemporary furnishings – including indoor and outdoor furniture, lighting, linens, rugs and decorative accessories – they will have the opportunity to take advantage of The Target® Design Speakers Series. These free seminars and off-site events feature some of the most prolific and influential members of the design industry.
In addition to the keynote presentation by design star Sami Hayek, the 2008 program will include architect Rob Rogers, principal of Rogers Marvel Architect; architect Jared Della Valle, principal Della Valle Bernheimer; renowned interior designers Amy Lau and Christopher Coleman; curators for both the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of Arts and Design; Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, creator of ApartmentTherapy.com; as well as editors from leading shelter and design magazines including Interior Design, New York Magazine, Dwell.com, domino, Metropolis, Metropolitan Home, American Craft and Readymade. Taking “Green” to the Next Level
The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and the producers of BKLYN DESIGNS continue to solidify their commitment to making the show a conduit for broader discourse on the issues that most concern the industry. Without a doubt, sustainability continues to be at the top of that list.
This year, not only will a number of BKLYN DESIGNS exhibitors show themselves as leaders in the development of sustainable products and design processes, the seminar programming will again include thought-provoking presentations on the topic.
Avant-garde author, architect and artist Fritz Haeg will read from his new book “Edible Estates: Attack on the Front Lawn.” The book explores Haeg’s project to convert traditional domestic front lawns into highly productive edible landscapes. It also addresses larger issues concerning the environment, global food production, and generating a sense of community in our urban and suburban neighborhoods.
In addition, a panel of experts and local sustainability activists will try to dispel some of the myths about “going green” and offer advice about bringing sustainability into everyday life.
Activities Abound
This will also be the second year for BKLYN DESIGNS +, a design accessories mart, created to give show visitors the opportunity to purchase smaller, Brooklyn-made, home and fashion accessories. An expert jury, which included members of show sponsor Target’s design/product development team, as well as Wendy Goodman, design editor for New York Magazine and Rima Suqi, freelancer writer for I.D., The New York Times, New York magazine and Departures, selected the designers who will be exhibiting at the Tobacco Warehouse in Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park. Pratt Institute will also put together a presentation of student work for sale. Entry to this venue will be free throughout the weekend.
An Airstream, designed by architect and designer Chris Deam (also the husband of Dwell.com founder Lara Hedberg Deam), will be parked outside of St. Ann’s Warehouse for the duration of the show. Mike Cannell, Dwell.com’s online editor will conduct live interviews with show exhibitors throughout the weekend inside. These will be recorded and posted in real time on the magazine’s Web site.

Our exhibitors are making headlines and sales all over the country and around the globe. The overwhelming interest in the show among consumers, the design community and media is directly correlated with the success of our talented designers.”
To accommodate the growing number of exhibitors and off-site programs, the show is expanding to another venue in 2008. In addition to exhibits at St. Ann’s Warehouse and the Smack Mellon Gallery, the second edition of BKLYN DESIGNS +, a curated cash-and-carry market for small design accessories made in Brooklyn, will be in the historic Tobacco Warehouse in Brooklyn Bridge Park. This year, BKLYN DESIGNS + applicants will be juried by executives from the Target design team and editors from Domino and New York magazines. The Brooklyn Chamber has put out a call for BKLYN DESIGNS + exhibitors, and interested designers should visit http://www.bklyndesigns.com/ for an application and deadline information.
This year, BKLYN DESIGNS attendees will be treated to a stimulating series of events, exhibits and panel discussions that will take place throughout the weekend. Past speakers have included such industry powerhouses as Enrique Norton, Michael Gabellini, Cameron Sinclair and Vito Acconci.
The Brooklyn Chamber is also pleased to announce that The Clarett Group has signed on once again as a key BKLYN DESIGNS sponsor, one of several sponsors returning. TARGET JOINS AS PRESENTING SPONSOR OF BKLYN DESIGNS™ 2008
Brooklyn Chamber Calls for Exhibitor Applications
(Brooklyn, NY – November, 2007) The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that for the sixth year in a row plans for BKLYN DESIGNS™ 2008 are underway. The three-day show, which officially kicks off NY Design Week, will take place May 9-11, 2008. Designs on display will include the latest Brooklyn-made indoor and outdoor furniture, rugs, lighting and accessories – all selected by a discerning jury of design editors and industry tastemakers. Adding to the momentum, is the announcement that leading retailer and design patron, Target, has signed on as a presenting sponsor. The 2008 show will build on the success of BKLYN DESIGNS 2007, which drew 6,500 attendees and included standing room only design seminars.
Stellar Sponsorships
Over the past five years, BKLYN DESIGNS has been made possible with the help of several premier manufacturers, retailers and local institutions. In 2008, Target will join returning sponsors – Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center, Two Trees Management, The Clarett Group, Interior Design, New York Magazine, Benjamin Moore, Con Edison and Pratt Institute – in supporting the show.
According to Carl Hum, president & CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, “We are thrilled that Target has come on board as a presenting sponsor. As a major retailer in the borough, this is a testament to their commitment to the neighborhood and to supporting Brooklyn’s creative economy. They are also a company committed to nurturing and celebrating great design. We couldn’t think of a better partner to bring awareness to our exhibitors’ excellent work.”
“We are delighted to join BKLYN DESIGNS this year as a sponsor of the 2008 show and the Target Design Speaker Series,” said Laura Sandall, director of events marketing and publicity for Target. “At Target, we believe that great design is more than great products, aesthetics and style. It’s about promoting creativity and innovation that leads to extraordinary products, processes and experiences; making great design accessible to all.”
Planning for 2008
In 2008, the streets of DUMBO will again be packed as visitors from across New York City and beyond flock to several locations showcasing the ever-growing line-up of Brooklyn-based designers and manufacturers of contemporary furnishings. The jury, made up of leading design professionals, including editors from the top shelter and design publications, will include: Karen Singh, market editor, Interior Design; Paul Makovsky, editorial director, Metropolis; Michael Cannell, New York editor, Dwell.com; Chip Cordelli, editorial stylist; Chris Craig, designer and creative director of Suite New York; Jen Renzi, freelance journalist; Rima Suqi, freelance journalist and former New York Magazine, Best Bets editor.
According to Dwell Magazine, “As the profile of Brooklyn’s design scene has risen, so has its homegrown showcase. Since it began four years ago, BKLYN DESIGNS…has more than doubled in size, and a distinctive style – defiant and crafty – has emerged. What began as a grassroots affair is now the official warm-up to, and sometimes preview of, the ICFF.”
While the focus of the show remains the same – to highlight the best contemporary home furnishing designers and manufacturers Brooklyn has to offer – the producers are working to develop a number of new initiatives that will showcase BKLYN DESIGNS’ continuing evolution and growth.
“Our goal each year is to surpass all expectations,” stated Mr. Hum. “We work closely with our advisory board, sponsors and neighboring businesses to ensure we are creating a program and exhibition that will both excite and inform attendees, who include New York area consumers and savvy design industry professionals from around the world.”
With sustainability continuing to be a topic of great concern, show producers are continuously developing new and creative ways to keep the focus on green materials and products produced locally.
Also, back by popular demand, is BKLYN DESIGNS +, the cash and carry accessories market that debuted at our fifth anniversary show. Finally, organizers are again working to put together a series of panels, seminars and activities that will ensure an action-packed weekend.
Returning exhibitor and owner of iglooplay, Lisa Albin said, “BKLYN DESIGNS is among my favorite three days of the year, from both a professional and personal perspective. Being in that space with such great designers is inspiring and the entire program is wonderful - meeting Ralph Pucci was a thrill. With each year that I participate in the show I see my exposure increase significantly. This year renowned designer Kitty Hawks placed a large order as a gift for her grandchildren.”
