BKLYN DESIGNS™ Six Years Strong
(Brooklyn, NY—May 20, 2008) An impressive 6,500 design lovers, including members of the media and trade, converged on DUMBO, Brooklyn, May 9 – 11 for BKLYN DESIGNS™ 2008, kicking off the much-anticipated New York Design Week. Presented annually by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, the record-breaking number of exhibitors and attendees at this year’s three-day exhibition has grown significantly since the show premiered in 2003. The action and excitement was nonstop all weekend, as visitors of all ages took advantage of all four show venues: St. Ann’s Warehouse, Smack Mellon, Dumbo Arts Center, and the BD+ Accessories Market in the Tobacco Warehouse in Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park. (Click here to view photos from the event.)
Seventy juried exhibitors flaunted their innovative contemporary furnishings, lighting, and accessories. The result was hundreds of meticulous creative masterpieces made from wood, metal, and glass for every room and any taste.
According to Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Carl Hum, “This year’s record-topping number of exhibitors and visitors to BKLYN DESIGNS™ demonstrates the excitement and interest in the borough’s creative community. The expansion to four venues, the growth of BD+, the design accessories market, and the assembly of thought-provoking panels offered something for everyone. The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is proud to have presented another edition of BKLYN DESIGNS™ and is already looking forward to next year.”
More than ever, eco-design was on the forefront with a number of participants exhibiting environmentally responsible practices in design and fabrication, including Argington’s hip children’s furniture, EcoSystems’s clever double position chair, Uhuru’s KUPE line, crafted from recycled whiskey barrels, and Nicholas Furrow’s custom lighting, showcased in whimsical pods made from salvaged records and their jackets.
According to Emmanuel Delalain, of Atelier Delalain, a brand new exhibitor, “This was our first show and I was just amazed at the public reaction; they were so emotional about the products and some waited until I was personally available at the booth to tell me how much they liked them. I was overwhelmed and it really touched my heart to see this reaction. It’s only been a few days since the show and I have been flooded with emails. BKLYN DESIGNS was an amazing experience for us overall.”
Added Noah Prince of Phosphoria Design, “Having only worked with architects, designers and decorators, I found BKLYN DESIGNS to be a wonderful opportunity to meet the public. As a lamp designer you need to have contact with all levels, especially the final user!”
Celeste Coughlin, owner of Asterisk Designs, was a returning exhibitor to the show. “BKLYN DESIGNS always draws an interesting and diverse crowd – with a perfect mix of press, designers and homeowners. They really responded to my range of hand-made, Venetian plaster papers. Our 10’ tall displays added a touch of drama to the experience and allowed attendees to touch the surfaces and better understand the production process.”
BKLYN DESIGNS’ Target® Design Speaker Series featured an exciting and well-received line-up of informative lectures and seminars appealing to all interests. Cutting-edge designer Sami Hayek set the standard with an inspiring keynote about his design process from luxury to mass. Julie Taraska, contributor for Interior Design, chatted with Pratt Institute alumni about how they are making their mark on the design world. Not forgetting Mother’s Day, New York Magazine design editor Wendy Goodman, led an open discussion for parents and kids about their design challenges and dreams.
Other session topics included the trend of limited-edition furniture making its way to museums and auction houses, a panel discussion about the recent renaissance of designing and manufacturing by craftspeople in Brooklyn, a discussion exploring the new alliance between design and development, as well as several conversations about the ever important issue of sustainability and going “green.”
“I was really surprised to see how many different exhibitors there were and the many takes on furnishings – from stickers to paintings to lighting to skateboards! It’s brilliant,” proclaimed Julius Robson, a first-time visitor to the show from Paris.
“I particularly like the intimacy of a small show with a neighborhood feel. Other shows can be hyper-produced and leave you feeling separated from the design, but BKLYN DESIGNS is tangible. It’s like visiting a village of designers who you can talk to, without feeling intimidated, which is very comforting,” stated product photographer Paul Godwin, another attendee.
Pratt Students Nab Top Honors
A definite highlight of the show was the Pratt Institute display of designs by undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Industrial Design, curated by Professor Tim Richartz. Attendees and bloggers were all abuzz about the excellence of this year’s work, which also caught the attention of the judges of this year’s show’s design awards.
The second annual Young Designer Award, a collaboration between Design Within Reach (DWR) and Pratt Institute, went to Ian Collings for “Urban Driftwood,” Gregory Buntain for “Axis” and Robert Volek for “Filament” (which additionally won third place earlier this year in the inaugural George Kovacs Lighting Competition). These top student designs will be on display at DWR, Brooklyn Heights for one month following the show.
Gregory Buntain was also the winner of the Target Design Award for his clever compact and ready-to-assemble “Intension” table, packaged neatly in its own wooden box. This first-time award celebrates exceptional talent and promise in the field of design and its winner was judged among all exhibitors of the show. As part of the award, Buntain has been invited to join an assembly of the country’s top designers in an event at the Cooper Hewitt during National Design Week in October.

(Brooklyn, NY – April 4 2008) Each spring thousands of design cognoscenti and furnishings lovers from around the world descend upon the Big Apple to take part in the much acclaimed New York Design week. BKLYN DESIGNS™, presented by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, is the event that launches the festivities. This year, the three-day show will feature a record-breaking line-up of 68 exhibitors - including 30 newcomers and 38 show veterans – and for the first time, has expanded to four DUMBO, Brooklyn venues. A revamped Web site will assist attendees with pre-show planning and information.
According to Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President Carl Hum, “The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is proud to present another edition of BKLYN DESIGNS. Every year, it becomes more evident that Brooklyn is not just a place where furniture is being designed and manufactured but that Brooklyn is the center of cutting-edge ideas, forward thinking, and innovative work. The Chamber is pleased that BKLYN DESIGNS brings this burgeoning creative community together.”

Taking “Green” to the Next Level
The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and the producers of BKLYN DESIGNS continue to solidify their commitment to making the show a conduit for broader discourse on the issues that most concern the industry. Without a doubt, sustainability continues to be at the top of that list.
This year, not only will a number of BKLYN DESIGNS exhibitors show themselves as leaders in the development of sustainable products and design processes, the seminar programming will again include thought-provoking presentations on the topic.
Avant-garde author, architect and artist Fritz Haeg will read from his new book “Edible Estates: Attack on the Front Lawn.” The book explores Haeg’s project to convert traditional domestic front lawns into highly productive edible landscapes. It also addresses larger issues concerning the environment, global food production, and generating a sense of community in our urban and suburban neighborhoods.
In addition, a panel of experts and local sustainability activists will try to dispel some of the myths about “going green” and offer advice about bringing sustainability into everyday life.
Activities Abound
This will also be the second year for BKLYN DESIGNS +, a design accessories mart, created to give show visitors the opportunity to purchase smaller, Brooklyn-made, home and fashion accessories. An expert jury, which included members of show sponsor Target’s design/product development team, as well as Wendy Goodman, design editor for New York Magazine and Rima Suqi, freelancer writer for I.D., The New York Times, New York magazine and Departures, selected the designers who will be exhibiting at the Tobacco Warehouse in Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park. Pratt Institute will also put together a presentation of student work for sale. Entry to this venue will be free throughout the weekend.
An Airstream, designed by architect and designer Chris Deam (also the husband of Dwell.com founder Lara Hedberg Deam), will be parked outside of St. Ann’s Warehouse for the duration of the show. Mike Cannell, Dwell.com’s online editor will conduct live interviews with show exhibitors throughout the weekend inside. These will be recorded and posted in real time on the magazine’s Web site.
On Friday, May 9, guests and designers can head to DWR Montague Street for the BKLYN DESIGNS kick-off party and celebration. To accommodate the growing number of exhibitors and off-site programs, the show is expanding to another venue in 2008. In addition to exhibits at St. Ann’s Warehouse and the Smack Mellon Gallery, the second edition of BKLYN DESIGNS +, a curated cash-and-carry market for small design accessories made in Brooklyn, will be in the historic Tobacco Warehouse in Brooklyn Bridge Park. This year, BKLYN DESIGNS + applicants will be juried by executives from the Target design team and editors from Domino and New York magazines. TARGET JOINS AS PRESENTING SPONSOR OF BKLYN DESIGNS™ 2008
Brooklyn Chamber Calls for Exhibitor Applications
(Brooklyn, NY – November, 2007) The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that for the sixth year in a row plans for BKLYN DESIGNS™ 2008 are underway. The three-day show, which officially kicks off NY Design Week, will take place May 9-11, 2008. Designs on display will include the latest Brooklyn-made indoor and outdoor furniture, rugs, lighting and accessories – all selected by a discerning jury of design editors and industry tastemakers. Adding to the momentum, is the announcement that leading retailer and design patron, Target, has signed on as a presenting sponsor. The 2008 show will build on the success of BKLYN DESIGNS 2007, which drew 6,500 attendees and included standing room only design seminars.
Stellar Sponsorships
Over the past five years, BKLYN DESIGNS has been made possible with the help of several premier manufacturers, retailers and local institutions. In 2008, Target will join returning sponsors – Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center, Two Trees Management, The Clarett Group, Interior Design, New York Magazine, Benjamin Moore, Con Edison and Pratt Institute – in supporting the show.
According to Carl Hum, president & CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, “We are thrilled that Target has come on board as a presenting sponsor. As a major retailer in the borough, this is a testament to their commitment to the neighborhood and to supporting Brooklyn’s creative economy. They are also a company committed to nurturing and celebrating great design. We couldn’t think of a better partner to bring awareness to our exhibitors’ excellent work.”
“We are delighted to join BKLYN DESIGNS this year as a sponsor of the 2008 show and the Target Design Speaker Series,” said Laura Sandall, director of events marketing and publicity for Target. “At Target, we believe that great design is more than great products, aesthetics and style. It’s about promoting creativity and innovation that leads to extraordinary products, processes and experiences; making great design accessible to all.”
Planning for 2008
In 2008, the streets of DUMBO will again be packed as visitors from across New York City and beyond flock to several locations showcasing the ever-growing line-up of Brooklyn-based designers and manufacturers of contemporary furnishings. The jury, made up of leading design professionals, including editors from the top shelter and design publications, will include: Karen Singh, market editor, Interior Design; Paul Makovsky, editorial director, Metropolis; Michael Cannell, New York editor, Dwell.com; Chip Cordelli, editorial stylist; Chris Craig, designer and creative director of Suite New York; Jen Renzi, freelance journalist; Rima Suqi, freelance journalist and former New York Magazine, Best Bets editor.
According to Dwell Magazine, “As the profile of Brooklyn’s design scene has risen, so has its homegrown showcase. Since it began four years ago, BKLYN DESIGNS…has more than doubled in size, and a distinctive style – defiant and crafty – has emerged. What began as a grassroots affair is now the official warm-up to, and sometimes preview of, the ICFF.”
While the focus of the show remains the same – to highlight the best contemporary home furnishing designers and manufacturers Brooklyn has to offer – the producers are working to develop a number of new initiatives that will showcase BKLYN DESIGNS’ continuing evolution and growth.
“Our goal each year is to surpass all expectations,” stated Mr. Hum. “We work closely with our advisory board, sponsors and neighboring businesses to ensure we are creating a program and exhibition that will both excite and inform attendees, who include New York area consumers and savvy design industry professionals from around the world.”
With sustainability continuing to be a topic of great concern, show producers are continuously developing new and creative ways to keep the focus on green materials and products produced locally.
Also, back by popular demand, is BKLYN DESIGNS +, the cash and carry accessories market that debuted at our fifth anniversary show. Finally, organizers are again working to put together a series of panels, seminars and activities that will ensure an action-packed weekend.
Returning exhibitor and owner of iglooplay, Lisa Albin said, “BKLYN DESIGNS is among my favorite three days of the year, from both a professional and personal perspective. Being in that space with such great designers is inspiring and the entire program is wonderful - meeting Ralph Pucci was a thrill. With each year that I participate in the show I see my exposure increase significantly. This year renowned designer Kitty Hawks placed a large order as a gift for her grandchildren.”

SUCCESS MARKS THE 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF BKLYN DESIGNS™
Thousands Filled Streets of DUMBO to Embrace Brooklyn Furniture Designers
(Brooklyn, NY – May 25, 2007) More than 6,500 people including media and members of the design trade converged on DUMBO May 11 – 13 to kick off New York Design Week at BKLYN DESIGNS™ 2007. The three-day show, presented annually by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, featured a record number of exhibitors and drew the biggest crowd since the show premiered in 2003. There was excitement in the air as masses of eager design-lovers from all over the world trekked up and down the cobblestone streets of DUMBO to see the best furniture, lighting, floor/wall coverings, accessories and sustainable products the borough has to offer.
According to Mark Kessler, interim president and chief operating officer of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, “BKLYN DESIGNS truly represents the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives throughout this borough. This year, we saw 35 returning exhibitors and welcomed 29 newcomers – a testament to the overwhelming success of the show. Now with the launch of the BKLYN DESIGNS Center at the Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center (GMDC) McKibbin Street – the only not-for-profit industrial developer in New York City – emerging Brooklyn designers and manufacturers have access to below market industrial space secured by long-term leases. This is all part of an effort to ensure our home-grown talent and quality craftsmen continue to manufacturer and flourish in Brooklyn.”
As tradition has it, wood is associated with a five-year anniversary. BKLYN DESIGNS exhibitors took this classic material to new heights using reclaimed, recycled or responsibly harvested varieties in envelope-pushing designs for home and office. It was evident designers pushed their creativity even further with other material innovations, displaying hand-crafted lighting inspired by urban landscapes of dilapidated building façades and graffiti art from Re-Surface; hip sustainable baby/children‘s furniture from Argington; lighting made from honey jars from Nicholas Furrow; whimsical gun-shot mirrors from Paul Loebach; a modern side table with built-in lighting from A&G Design; hairy monster-inspired rugs and wing-back chairs from Longoland; sleek glass tables with overscale turned legs from Robert Austin Gonzalez; an innovative exhibit of work including glass handrails and lights by first-time exhibitor Brooklyn Glass (a collective of glass artists); and eclectic furnishings with matching skateboards all made from recycled materials by Daniel Moyer Design & Fabrication.
With 19,000 square feet of exhibit space, 1000+ pre-registered members of the trade, packed lectures and three heavily trafficked venues filled with patrons throughout the sunny weekend, it was clear this show had much more to celebrate than its five-year milestone.
First-time exhibitor Lois Ruben Aronow said, “This was a great show on many levels. Aside from the obvious, which for me included several incredible commissions, I made some really great media, business and artistic contacts. The attendance was head spinning. Friends and neighbors aside, I met people who had come from different parts of the country just to attend this show. The buyers/attendees understood the work they were looking at. Finally, I found the crowd that really understands my work!”
Corey Springer of Wud Furniture Design shared his enthusiasm saying, “BKLYN DESIGNS was once again a great experience for Wud Furniture Design. It is always inspiring to be surrounded by all the emerging talent that is coming out of Brooklyn. While the show keeps getting bigger every year, the event still feels intimate and I think that is appealing to both the designers and the attendees. It is also great to meet new people from the community, as well as see the familiar faces from years past.”
According to returning exhibitor David Scott of DESU Design, “We were pleasantly overwhelmed with the show attendance this year. In fact, we ran out of our promotional materials, which has never happened to us at a trade show before! Overall, we had a lot of positive feedback and a great mix of new and return customers.”
Bill Hilgendorf of Uhuru Design was back for the third year: “It was great to come back to BKLYN DESIGNS with a bigger booth and a brand new line of furniture. We grew so much in the last year due to exposure from the show. Our design calendar now is totally determined by BKLYN DESIGNS. We use it as an opportunity to launch all of our new products. Brooklyn is a great design community and I think the show is responsible for making it stronger every year. We are already looking forward to next year’s show.”
Finally, the show included an informative series of design lectures and seminars led by industry icons and editors at top-notch shelter and lifestyle magazines. The respected Ralph Pucci of Ralph Rucci International and Linda O’Keeffe, director, Design + Architecture Metropolitan Home set the standard with an inspiring keynote.
There was standing room only as a crowd poured in to attend a Pratt Institute session, What’s Next? Today’s Hot Sustainable Designers and Educators from Pratt Institute Look at How the Next Generation Will Differ, moderated by Fred Bernstein as well as Dwell’s hands-on session, Going Green: Daunting or Doable, moderated by Michael Cannell.
“I sat in on some lectures on Saturday and made it a point to come back again on Sunday,” said Aki Okado, architect, Point Design, Inc. “It was great to see such a big emphasis on green design.”
BKLYN DESIGNS™ is sponsored by Two Trees Management, Bosch, Thermador, Gaggenau, Forté Condo, Pratt Institute, BKLYN DESIGNS™ Gallery at GMDC, Benjamin Moore & Co., Con Edison, AIA, ASID and IIDA.
